On behalf of the Board of Directors of Wolverhampton Grammar School I am writing to let you know that our Head, Alex Frazer, has made the difficult decision to relinquish his post and leave the School at the end of the current academic year.
Alex would like to share the following words:
“It has been my privilege to serve Wolverhampton Grammar School as its Head since September 2020. I am proud of the achievements of the past three years and I have relished being part of the wonderful WGS community: students, colleagues, parents and alumni. Having decided as a result of the pandemic that my wife and children would remain at home in West London, the strain of separation has unfortunately built over time and, with great sadness, I feel I need to prioritise my family at this time. The Directors have been extremely understanding and have agreed to release me at the end of the Summer term. I would like to thank everyone at the School for their support and understanding. I shall always think of my time at WGS with respect and fondness.”
The Board thanks Alex for his hard work and commitment, wisely steering the School through the rigours of the pandemic and getting WGS life back to normal in the period following, whilst also overseeing the expansion of the Junior School, reintroducing the House System to the Senior School and celebrating outstanding public exam results in 2022, including the best A-level grades at the School for over 10 years. We wish Alex and his family well for the future.
Over the coming months the Board will be working closely with the Senior Management Team to recruit a new Head. As you will appreciate, this is not a process to be rushed and we wish to appoint a leader of the right calibre and experience to take WGS into its next successful chapter. In the interim, I am delighted to announce that Nic Anderson will be promoted to the role of Acting Head, effective 1 September 2023.
Nic, as many in the OW community will know, has an association with WGS spanning some 40 years – first as a student and since 1997 as a member of staff. He joined us as a Maths Teacher and Teacher in charge of boys’ hockey, then in 2005 as Head of Lower School in charge of Years 6, 7 and 8 and now in his current role as Deputy Head since 2009.
Whether your association with Nic is as a fellow student or as your former teacher, you will all know that he has the School’s best interests at heart and will give his full commitment and dedication to seeing the School through this transitionary period. Nurturing relationships with students, staff and OWs, Nic is proud and protective of the School in equal measure. His own personal high standards for academic excellence in his Maths teaching will ensure the very best quality of teaching and learning is prioritised and maintained across the board. Nic’s passion for all-round education will make sure that the academic is also supported by the best pastoral care and broad extra-curricular opportunities over the coming academic year. Clearly, Nic has a long and close working relationship with the Senior Management Team, including Dan Peters, Head of WGJS, and together they will ensure continuity of education for students transitioning to the Senior School.
I will update you in due course of further developments regarding the leadership of the School.
With best wishes
James Sage
